Our Story

Welcome to Geordie Crackets!

We are Mike and Gillian, proud lifelong residents of Newcastle with a strong passion for our city's vibrant traditions. The arrival of our first granddaughter sparked us to reconnect with Jim and Jean Thompson, who have been crafting crackets for our family for over 30 years. We jumped at the opportunity to take over their business as they have recently retired due to ill health.

Each piece is now handmade by us in our workshop in Newcastle upon Tyne. We are thrilled to continue this beloved tradition, and we hope you enjoy and treasure our crackets just as much as we do!

A bit about our Crackets

Crackets were used by coal miners in the North East of England. These homemade crackets, often cobbled together from old boxes and wood, served as headrests or seating in narrow mine seams. The hole in the top of the cracket made them easy to carry, and their U-shaped legs provided stability on uneven ground.  They also used the the crackets for breaks, eating snacks and socialising, while women used them as small steps or to sit by the fire.

With the decline of coal mining in the late 20th century, the cracket was redesigned by Jack Coates, who personalized crackets with names and added money boxes.

Today, we are proud to continue the tradition of making crackets as unique gifts.

Cracket sizes are 36cm L * 22cm W * 22cm H and made of pine with a satin varnish finish.
